Science Experiment Monday: Seedlings

We had the quickest results with the seedlings in the window.

Overall, we had a lot to talk about because the seeds on the kitchen table started to sprout -- and then died when they weren't kept moist (we went camping this weekend). And the seeds at the bottom of the bags in the window didn't sprout because they were submerged in water. That led to some good talks about what conditions seeds need to grow and how floods and drought affect crops, etc.

And the best part for the kids? Eating the sprouts, of course!

Rain Forest Plants Activity

Today I gathered up the various foods and spices that
go along with the rain forest plant cards. The kids were
intrigued and excited ("we get to TRY everything, right?!!")

To introduce the rain forests, we first did our world pin map
(bottom right) and sang our continent song. (At one point, someone from overseas asked if we could tell them how the melody goes. I videoed the kids singing the song and shared that at that post. We're certainly not professional --with video or singers, but if you wonder how we used the map/song in the preschool years, that post will show you what we did.)

Then we pulled out the biome pin map, placed the
deciduous and coniferous forests (that we studied last
week) and then looked at the rain forest regions of the
world and put that pin on the map as well.

We then took the continent cards (above - We have similar ones in our 60+ page World Animal Packet.) and took turns placing the continents in the correct place out on the floor.
We put the lists of native plants on the proper region -- ie. the Americas, Australasia, etc.

NOTE: The rainforest plant cards have moved to our new blog. They are free.  You will find them at this link:   Rainforest Plant Cards: homeschoolden.com

Each person got several of the rain forest plant cards and
we took turns putting them in the correct regions of the
world along with the spice, food (or shoe!) They really
enjoyed smelling (and tasting) everything (especially the
chocolate which isn't in the photos above)! I think this
activity was a success. Now they're watching the Magic
School Bus -- Rainforest episode giving me a chance to
post and get lunch on the table. Whew!

I hope you and your kids have fun with these cards!
It's amazing how much we rely on the rain forest regions
of the world.

By the way, the cards refer to where the plants originated, but
of course these days plants are grown in multiple regions of the
world.

So, here are the cards I made. I spent a long time last

but had to give up. Here are some photos, though clicking

Rain Forest Plants -- 3-Part Cards

I'm getting ready for our next biome study.  I have a number of rain forest animal cards already.  I noticed that there are so many plants that we use daily in our kitchens and around the home that I thought I would include some rain forest plants in our studies.

Anyway, today I made some 3-part cards on rain forest plants. Some of these plants include cacao, allspice, vanilla, black pepper, nutmeg, bamboo, rubber, and more. I'm not sure I did it properly as I made them in landscape and they appear to be portrait.

If you are interested learning about rain forest plants feel free to use the cards I made. These are now located at our new location, homeschoolden.com

Layers of the Earth Activity and Cards

I've been quite ill this week (I think I was awake for a total of three hours yesterday), so I won't be posting very much this week. Someone shared a link to the learning ark where there was a wonderful hands on activity about the layers of the earth. There are printable layers of the earth cards at Cultivating Dharma.

Just Life

I had a wonderful conversation with my sister the other evening. (My amazing sister who homeschools her three kids, holds a full-time job and whose husband is currently deployed for nine or ten months. Truly an amazing, inspiring person in my life.) Anyway, I was talking about how the blog world is so inaccurate and really doesn't show what life is really like for us. The reality is, I was saying to Sis, that I share lots of our five-to-ten minute activities, but don't talk much about the other eight or nine hours of our day. The other day, for example, we went to the playground and spent a long time lying under the tree watching the birds. We saw galahs, Murray Magpies, honey eaters (middle picture) and Port Lincoln ring-necked parrots (last picture). It was relaxing and fun just hanging out. And then we had a lot of fun having races around the very large park.

The reality of life is more like that, hanging out together as a family, with large doses of playing, looking at critters, learning vicariously, reading, growing, running, and living life.

Grandpa takes professional quality bird photos, so I'm a bit embarrassed to include these, but here you go anyway!

Just Life (cont.) - 2

Last week we enjoyed an outing to the reptile centre
where the kids got to hold a bearded dragon, blue tongued
lizard (first and second photos) and a python.

We enjoyed checking everything out!

More Reptile Centre Pics

1) Eastern Brown Snake
2) Frilled Necked Lizard
3-4) Perentie (it's shedding its skin) I should add that this perentie
is probably just over 1 meter/3 feet long.  The largest perentie can grow to be over 2 meters long (up to 7 or 8 feet long!).
